Apple Patent Application Details iPhone Control Via Finger Swipes Over Camera

Patently Apple points to another interesting patent application from Apple filed in August 2008 and published this morning detailing means of controlling an iPhone or other handheld device by swiping one's finger across the camera lens. Most prominently, the document suggests the use of the proposed functionality to control voicemail options such as rewind, fast forward, pause and other options while the handset is held to the user's ear. The patent application also describes integration of an accelerometer to detect tapping input to supplement the finger swipes.

In one embodiment, to access his voice mailbox, a user may tap the phone to cause playback of a message to pause, tap the phone again to resume playback, swipe his finger over the camera lens in one direction to fast forward playback, and swipe his finger over the camera lens in another direction to rewind playback. These actions allow the user to control functions of voicemail review without removing the device from over his ear.

In another embodiment, functions for controlling call features utilize similar user actions or motions. Features such as merging multiple calls, putting a call on hold, and switching between or among multiple simultaneous calls may be controlled by single or double (or any number of) taps of the device, as detected by an accelerometer of the device. These taps may be preprogrammed by a manufacturer, or selected and programmed by a user.

Apple's patent application also describes the use of swiping over the device's camera for navigation in a document or application. Finger swiping over the camera lens could be used to navigate Web pages or other content such as contact lists.


Apple has clearly been researching methods of input for its handheld devices that do not directly involve a touchscreen. Several years ago, Apple filed a patent application describing the use of "back side touch" for controlling an iPod, while earlier this month the company was granted a patent for a touch-sensitive bezel. One analyst has also claimed that Apple's next-generation iPhone will include a touch-sensitive casing.

SAN FRANCISCO — A handful of presumptive biographers have, over the years, tried to tell the remarkable story of Steven P. Jobs: the youthful visionary who, after being ousted from Apple, the company he helped to found, triumphantly returned to lead a new era of high-tech innovation.
But those efforts lacked one important ingredient: cooperation from Mr. Jobs himself.
Now Apple’s chief executive is set to collaborate on an authorized biography, to be written by Walter Isaacson, the former managing editor of Time magazine, according to two people briefed on the project.
The book, which is in the early planning stages, would cover the entire life of Mr. Jobs, from his youth in the area now known as Silicon Valley through his years at Apple, these people said.
Mr. Jobs, who will turn 55 on Feb. 24, has invited Mr. Isaacson to tour his childhood home, one person with knowledge of the discussion said.
Mr. Isaacson declined to comment.
Mr. Isaacson is currently the chief executive and president of the Aspen Institute, a nonprofit education and policy studies organization based in Washington.
He is the author of two best-selling biographies, “Einstein: His Life and Universe” and “Benjamin Franklin: An American Life.” He also wrote “American Sketches: Great Leaders, Creative Thinkers, and Heroes of a Hurricane,” a collection of essays written last year delving into the roots of great leadership. All of his books have been published by Simon & Schuster.
The unauthorized accounts of the life of Mr. Jobs published over the years have included “iCon: Steve Jobs, the Greatest Second Act in the History of Business,” by Jeffrey S. Young and William L. Simon, and “The Second Coming of Steve Jobs,” by Alan Deutschman.
Mr. Jobs has reacted angrily to some of these books, and in some cases has directed Apple stores to temporarily remove other books from the same publishers from their shelves.
Cooperation with Mr. Isaacson could be a sign that Mr. Jobs has emerged from his recent health battles with more of an interest in shaping his legacy.
Katie Cotton, an Apple spokeswoman, said the company does not comment on rumors.

OS X 小技巧：讓你的 Quick Look 功能更好用！

Quick Look 是 Finder 中一個非常方便的功能，只要按下空白鍵，就能夠立刻預覽所選擇的檔案。不論是圖片、音樂、影片、PDF、甚至是 Word 文件等，都可以在不開啓任何程式的情況下直接觀看或聆聽檔案內容。

但是，預覽檔案時，只要一切換到 Finder 以外的應用程式，Quick Look 的視窗就會消失，有時候可能會覺得不太方便。在這邊教大家一個非常簡單的小密技，使用後就可以讓你的 Quick Look 視窗即使在離開 Finder 後還能繼續顯示！

這個密技的做法非常簡單，只需要在「終端機」內輸入一行指令就可以了。

步驟一：請打開 Finder 視窗，進入「應用程式」>「工具程式」，之後打開裡面的「終端機」程式

步驟二：複製下一行的代碼，到終端機中貼上後按下 Return（也就是 Enter ），之後關閉終端機

步驟三：接下來只要重新啓動 Finder 就完成了。做法是：同時在鍵盤上按下 Option + Command + Esc，會出現「強制結束」視窗，請點選 Finder，之後點選「重新啓動」按鈕即可。

Finder 重新啓動完成後，你可以試著叫出任何一個檔案的 Quick Look 視窗。然後切換到別的應用程式，你會發現 Quick Look 的視窗依然還會存在。要關閉的話，只要按下視窗左上角的 X，或是到 Finder 再按一下空白鍵就好了。

舉例來說，如過你想要一邊參考某份 PDF 檔案，一邊用 Pages 撰寫文章，這時不需要同時開啓 Pages 和預覽程式，只要用 Quick Look 就可以把 PDF 檔案的預覽並列在 Pages 的視窗旁邊喔！

如果想要改回原本的樣子，只要依照相同的步驟，但將以下的代碼貼上終端機後按下 Return 即可。

Mobile operators unite on global apps platform(GAP)

The world’s largest mobile operators have joined forces to launch an open international applications platform, marking the largest unified move to date by the operator community into the mobile apps space.

The so-called ‘Wholesale Applications Community’ will combine 24 of the world’s largest mobile carriers, including America Movil, AT&T, Bharti Airtel, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, KT, mobilkom Austria, MTN Group, NTT Docomo, Orange, Orascom Telecom, Telecom Italia, Telefonica, Telenor, TeliaSonera, SingTel, SK Telecom, Sprint, VimpelCom and WIND. The four operators in the Joint Innovation Lab (JIL) mobile apps initiative – Vodafone, China Mobile, SoftBank and Verizon Wireless – are also included. The group serves a combined 3 billion mobile customers across the globe. Industry association the GSMA has backed the move.

The alliance aims to create a wholesale platform for mobile apps that provides a single point-of-entry for developers. The move is being seen as the operator community’s challenge to the mobile application stores currently offered by the likes of Apple, which are typically linked to a specific device platform. The iPhone-maker’s hugely-successful ‘App Store’ – launched in 2008 - registered its 3 billionth download last month and has spawned numerous imitators. 

However, several handset vendors without a significant apps business – including LG, Samsung and Sony Ericsson – have already pledged their support to the new operator-led initiative. It is hoped that the scheme will provide application services over a far wider choice of devices than available today.
In order to overcome what they term a “fragmented” applications marketplace, the operators plan to use common open standards that will allow developers to create applications across multiple platforms. The alliance plans to initially use both the JIL and OMTP BONDI requirements, evolving these standards into a common standard within the next 12 months.

Operators are also eyeing the revenue-generating potential of getting into the apps business. Although Apple has not disclosed how much profit it makes from App Store, the firm takes a 30 percent slice of revenue from every app it sells via its platform. It is likely that operators will use a similar model; Vodafone, for example, also takes a 30 percent revenue share on its Vodafone 360 apps platform.

Office for Mac 2011

在美國時間週四的 Macworld 2010，Microsoft 預先展示了下一個版本的 Mac 版 Office 辦公室套裝軟體。這套新版本的文書軟體將會於 2010 年底前上市，提供與 Windows 版本相搭配更好的相容性、改善協同作業工具、Visual Basic 支援等，同時會納入 Outlook for Mac 來取代現有的 Entourage 作為電子郵件用戶端。

針對相容性的改善，Mac BU 表示，在一平台上製作的文件、試算表及簡報將更可在另一平台上正確地呈現，解決檔案格式與繪圖引擎在跨平台上作業的問題，讓新版的 Office for Mac 在功能性上與 Windows 版本更加相容。

協同作業與相容性

此外，新版本的 Office for Mac 也將會整合文件協同作業的功能，以便利用 Microsoft 線上文件與儲存空間的功能，Office for Mac 2011 可讓 Mac 使用者透過 Microsoft 的 SharePoint、SkyDrive 及 Office Web 程式來與其他 Mac 和 Windows 使用者共享檔案與共同協作。線上工具可讓使用者在線上與其他 Windows 和 Mac Office 的使用者一同編輯文件，與現在 Google Docs 的方式類似。

Ribbon 分類選項新介面

在展示的 Word 2011 畫面中，可以看到 Office 2011 採用了新的介面，但 Mac 與 Windows PC 使用者應該都已算熟悉，Mac BU 在其部落格上稱它為 "Office for Mac Ribbon"，它完全採用 Apple 的 Cocoa 開發架構來重新設計，並採用了 Apple 的 Core Animation 系統。一方面 Mac 使用者仍可取用喜愛的相關屬性與選項，同時也會看到在 Office 2007 上見過的 Ribbon 介面 (不過不少使用者並不習慣這樣的介面) 以及 Office 2010 for Windows 的介面。

Outlook 與 Visual Basic

Office 2011 也將會導入 Outlook，而 Entourage 則會走入歷史；新的 Outlook 將可支援輸入 PST 檔案，因此使用者將可從 Windows PC 移動和遷移 Outlook 的郵件和資料到 Mac 上，此外亦支援 Microsoft 的 IRM (Information Rights Management)，讓使用者決定收件人對郵件的操作權限。經過重新設計的 Outlook 郵件資料庫系統運用了拆分小檔的序列方式，因此可輕鬆地以 Time Machine 加以備份，更支援 Spotlight 搜尋。

進階級的玩家應該會很高興看到 Visual Basic 巨集的功能回到這套軟體中，先前 Microsoft 將其從 Office 2008 拿掉，當時尚未來得及遷移程式碼，現在整個移轉的作業已經完成，Mac 使用者將可使用到最新版本的 Visual Basic，且與 Windows 版 Office 的相容性也提昇不少。

Steve Jobs held a town hall meeting with Apple employees late last week following the iPad launch. Wired reports on what was said at the meeting by Steve Jobs. Two of the biggest topics included Google and Adobe.

On Google, Jobs confirms the much-reported competition between the two companies.

On Google: We did not enter the search business, Jobs said. They entered the phone business. Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won't let them, he says.

As for Adobe, Jobs said they are lazy and Jobs blames Adobe for a buggy implementation of Flash on the Mac as one of the reasons they won't support it.

Apple does not support Flash because it is so buggy, he says. Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it's because of Flash. No one will be using Flash, he says. The world is moving to HTML5.

Those are the main points covered by Wired's article. We had received a more detailed report of the Apple meeting, but hadn't been able to corroborate it until now. Many of the details of the Wired report were identical to our anonymous submission, so we believe it to be accurate. Some additional key points that we learned:

- Apple will deliver aggressive updates to iPhone that Android/Google won't be able to keep up with
- iPad is up there with the iPhone and Mac as the most important products Jobs has been a part of
- Regarding the Lala acquisition, Apple was interested in bringing those people into the iTunes team
- Next iPhone coming is an A+ update
- New Macs for 2010 are going to take Apple to the next level
- Blu-Ray software is a mess, and Apple will wait until sales really start to take off before implementing it.
